Fort William and Ben Nevis observatory

At the top of Ben Nevis, there was an observatory opened in 1883. It produced meteorological information for 20 years on an hourly basis. The observatory was run by one manager and two staff who braved all weathers to provide data every hour. It was closed down due to lack of government funding and the ruins of the observatory still sit at the summit of Ben Nevis. The data collected is still seen as the most comprehensive set of data ever collected on British mountain weather.
